A Brief History of Peugeot

Peugeot is one of the oldest and most successful automakers in Europe. A family owned business at the start, Peugeot produced its first petrol-powered automobile in 1891. Today they are the second largest European automaker behind Volkswagen.

Like many successful carmakers, Peugeot began by manufacturing bicycles. But before long the company began experimenting with automotive technology. At the time, automobiles were little more than an expensive curiosity. Still, the company produced a working prototype in 1889.

When the internal combustion engine was introduced in the late nineteenth century, it was clear the automobile was the future of transportation. Peugeot and other early European automakers were certain of this and immediately put all of their eggs in the automotive basket. What about second hand and used Peugeot?

There are three watershed moments in the history of Peugeot. The first is when they acquired Citroen (a top French automaker) and the second was when they took over the European division of Chrysler in 1978.

The last and arguably the most important was when they introduced that wildly successful Peugeot 205 in 1983. Lauded as the car of the decade by many top automotive publications, it would go on to sell over five million units.

The success of the Peugeot 205 was doubly important to the company because it identified a uniquely European trend. Buyers preferred economical compacts and super minis rather than huge saloon or family cars. Today, Peugeot is one of the leading brands in Europe and their vehicles are a familiar sight on UK roads.
